When did Wanja leave Kenya?

Wanja Mwaura left the country in 2024 to seek treatment for a condition that could not be treated in Kenya, and after the treatment, the doctor had given her a clean bill of health; she was due to return to the country in March.

“The doctor gave me a clean bill of health, and that is why I was intending to return home. I found an ongoing war, and it stopped, and in July last year there was another one between the US and Iran; that lasted for two weeks,” she said of her experience.

According to Wanja, this time the war is very intense, and it is something that she had not bargained for; here they are talking of missiles, rockets and not gunshots.

“You have to find a way of becoming like one of them, and you have to learn about what happens during the war. There are so many ways of alerting you that there are going to be missiles, and there is a red alert that comes to your phone showing a rocket has been fired; you need to go to a protective area,” she said.

“It tells you the timeframe you should be at the bomb shelter, and that is 90 seconds to get away from where you are to the nearest shelter. All public facilities have bunkers; you can get them on the roads, hospitals and schools,” she said.

Kenyans in Israel check on each other all the time, and even when a siren goes off, they check on each other, and so far, they have been quite safe. Wanja said the Kenyan consulate gave them a link to register and nothing more than that because of a lack of communication.

She, however, shared that it is not a whole-day thing, and you can go about your normal day-to-day things. Public gatherings such as schools or going to the synagogues are, however, banned.
