A young man who was among the 27 injured students at Kabianga University has painfully opened up about the heart-wrenching incident.

The tragedy occurred on Tuesday, April 14, after a building slab collapsed, causing panic and triggering a stampede.

A section of a wall in Lecture Theatre Block 4 gave way, sending dozens of students, who were sitting for their exams, into panic.

Several students reportedly jumped from the building in a desperate attempt to save their lives after exits became congested.
“I was unable to use the door to escape because many people were using it to get out and save their lives. I decided to jump from the building through the window. I was on the third floor and heard screams from my fellow students on the fourth floor. The pillars holding the building began to collapse, leading to the disaster,” Kiprotich said.
The student was in class studying Kiswahili when the incident occurred. He sustained serious injuries, breaking his arm and leg in the process.

As he recounted the traumatic event from his hospital bed, he appeared to be in pain following the ordeal.
“The injuries we have seen are mostly minor. Only two are serious. One patient has a fracture of the femur, and another has a fracture in the orbital area. They have been managed and stabilised at our Accident and Emergency Department. We conducted what we call a trauma series, including radiological imaging and an ultrasound, and there are no major complications,” confirmed the officer in charge of emergency medical services, Dr. Jojo Witi of Kericho County Referral Hospital.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Eric Koch, stated that a structural fixture detached from Lecture Hall Four and fell onto a nearby pathway, causing panic among students.

Investigations have since commenced to determine the cause of the incident.
