AP reports that Trump ordered two bags of McDonald’s delivered to the Oval Office on Monday, and a female DoorDash driver undertook the task and once done, he tipped her KSh 13,000. The latter is seen as a move targeted towards promoting a tax policy he says has meant big rebates for Americans who earn gratuities.

Elderly Sharon Simmons who was dressed in a “DoorDash Grandma” T-shirt, walked up to the exterior door of the Oval Office and knocked;Trump popped out and said, “Hello. Nice to see you,” before proclaiming, “Look at this! This doesn’t look staged, does it?”

The Trump-backed tax and spend package that was approved last summer allows Americans to temporarily deduct some federal taxes from income that workers earn on tips. It lets certain workers deduct up to $25,000, but phases out for those with higher incomes.

For many years, McDonald’s has been a longtime favourite of the president — and fare he’s used to political ends before. Simmons narrated how the tax changes helped reduce the amount of income coming her way. Simmons subsequently told reporters she had earned more than $11,000 in tips a year.

Trump then asked, “Would you like to do a little news conference with me?”

She stood awkwardly beside him as he fielded questions about his threats to blockade the Strait of Hormuz and refusal to apologise to Pope Leo.

How did Simmons react to the tip?

“I think you voted for me. Do you think?” asked Trump.

To which she responded, Um, maybe.”

Undaunted, Trump continued: “I heard you’re a great supporter. We appreciate it.”

When a reporter later asked if the White House was a good tipper, Simmons hesitated: “Um … potentially.”

Before giving the tip, a reporter had asked the woman if the White House was a good tipper, and she responded ‘potentially’. That’s how Trump got in his pocket and fished for KSh 13000 ($100), and Simon changed her tune to ‘The White House is a very good tippers.’

Trump also invited Simmons and her husband to a UFC bout that he’s helping to stage on the White House lawn for his 80th birthday in June.

Simmons reiterated that there should be no tax on tips.

The White House later said that Trump personally delivered the food — consisting of cheeseburgers and fries — to West Wing staff.
