Downsizing often comes with difficulties and struggles in adjustment, but this was not the case for a family of four.

Julia Clarke, her husband, and their two children lived in a spacious three-bedroom palatial home in a beautiful, upscale neighbourhood.
However, circumstances forced them to move into a one-bedroom apartment, which she initially thought would be challenging, but later found surprisingly perfect.
The small house, located at the edge of a leafy park in a trendy neighbourhood, became their home for at least a few months.

Why did Julia and her family move to a smaller house?
Julia said she needed to move closer to her mother’s home to care for her as she recovered from surgery.
Initially, she thought they would struggle, and coming from a large house, a one-bedroom apartment would feel too cramped for them.
“We transformed the living room and dining area into a second bedroom for the kids and began living a more compact life. I thought the move would mean sacrifice for all of us, but in many ways, living in a smaller space has made our lives so much better,” she said.
As time went by, her worries faded as they realised they were happier in the smaller space than they had been in their large home.
Having less space meant they could see each other more often and spend quality time together, unlike before when everyone stayed in their separate rooms.
“I won’t pretend I didn’t have some concerns about our plan. Our kids grew up being able to disappear into their bedrooms for hours at a time. Now they’re sharing a room where we also eat our meals. As it turns out, the extra space in our larger home meant we spent less quality time together as a family,” Julia said in a report by Business Insider Africa.

What are the advantages of living in a small house?
Julia said their family bond grew stronger as they began playing card games together after dinner. Sometimes they watch TV shows together, something they now look forward to most evenings.
“Miraculously, our teenager has even started opening up to us again. Kids aren’t known for being the tidiest, and I worried that such a small space would become too cluttered. But downsizing has made life simpler and easier for all of us,” she explained.
The mother of two added that living in a bigger house meant there was plenty of space to hide things everywhere, but the smaller home taught them discipline and tidiness.
Julia and her husband had to build shelves in their new home, add storage units, and move in with only basic necessities.
Everything else was placed into storage, donated to charity, or taken to a recycling centre.

She admitted that she realised all they truly needed was a small space as a family to be happy, as everything now runs more smoothly.
“The kids can’t tuck their belongings away using under-bed storage without us nagging them, and there is very little to trip over or argue about. Besides, it’s hard to lose anything, and our living space always feels neat and easy to relax in,” she added.
The mother of two said their new lifestyle is not perfect, but the advantages of the one-bedroom home have so far outweighed the disadvantages.
“We are fortunate to live this way because we’ve chosen to, not necessarily because we have to. Instead of feeling like a temporary drastic measure, it just feels like our cosy, slightly crazy home,” said the happy woman.
