In a conversation on the Dear Ife podcast, Pastor Tolu Odukoya made a brief but striking observation about family roles and expectations, speaking specifically about the burden of being a first daughter and child.
Odukoya told Dear Ife: “The mistake that firstborn daughters make is they feel they need to mother rather than lead.”
It’s a short statement, but one that reflects a familiar pattern in many homes. Being the first child often comes with responsibility.
But for many daughters, that responsibility goes beyond leadership and gradually turns into something more demanding. Instead of simply guiding or setting an example, they begin to take on emotional roles, stepping in, holding things together, and carrying weight that isn’t always clearly assigned. That pressure can start early.
In the same conversation, Odukoya also acknowledged the weight that comes with responsibility in leadership, saying: “The (the first daughter’s office) office has so much responsibility and I did not want it.” That reluctance highlights a reality many firstborn daughters experience but rarely express openly, the tension between expectation and readiness.
Leadership, ideally, allows room for growth, learning, and direction. But when it becomes “mothering,” it often comes with emotional labour, sacrifice, and the quiet expectation to always be available.
The difference matters. When responsibility is misunderstood, it can shape identity in ways that are difficult to undo. The need to always be dependable can make it harder to step back, to rest, or to separate personal needs from family roles.
What makes the observation stand out is its simplicity. It doesn’t reject responsibility. It reframes it.
Odukoya added: “Firstborn daughters are not meant to carry everything. They are meant to lead, not lose themselves in the process.”
