Promises competence, accountability
By Henry Ojelu
A legal practitioner and tax expert, Mr. Olugbuyiro Akinola, has declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Akure North/South Federal Constituency, pledging to bring competence, accountability and technical expertise to legislative duties.
Akinola, who currently serves as a part-time Commissioner at the Tax Appeal Tribunal, TAT, said his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to strengthen governance through informed lawmaking and effective representation.
In campaign messages shared during public engagements and online platforms, he emphasised the need to move away from what he described as “routine representation” to a more purposeful and result-driven approach in the National Assembly.
According to him, “Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges require lawmakers with a strong understanding of legal, financial and regulatory systems. Representation must go beyond mere presence in the legislature and translate into measurable impact on the lives of constituents.”
He said his over two decades of experience spanning legal practice, taxation, banking and media have equipped him with the capacity to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Outlining his agenda, Akinola said he would focus on improving legislative quality, strengthening oversight functions and ensuring that government policies deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
He identified accountability, fiscal discipline and economic development as key priorities, stressing that lawmakers must play a more active role in scrutinising public spending.
“Parliament must ensure that public resources are used efficiently and that laws support business growth, attract investment and create jobs, particularly for young people,” he said.
Akinola is the founding partner of Stonewaters Law Office, where he has handled complex financial and regulatory transactions, including cross-border financing, corporate restructuring and compliance matters. His legal expertise also covers insolvency litigation and federal securities law.
Before establishing his firm, he worked with Olaniwun Ajayi LP and George Etomi & Partners, where he gained experience in corporate and commercial law. He began his career in banking at Trans International Bank during his National Youth Service and later moved into tax practice with Ruku & Associates.
Beyond legal practice, Akinola has experience in journalism, having worked as a financial correspondent with The Comet and The Nation, covering economic and financial issues.
His role as a Commissioner at the Tax Appeal Tribunal further underscores his involvement in Nigeria’s fiscal system, where he has participated in adjudicating tax disputes and interpreting fiscal laws.
Political background
Akinola’s political involvement dates back to the early 1990s with the Social Democratic Party, SDP. He later became active in the Alliance for Democracy, AD, and the All Progressives Congress, APC.
He previously served as Deputy National Legal Adviser to a Presidential Independent Campaign Council and worked as a Senior Legislative Aide to a lawmaker representing Akure North/South Federal Constituency in 2015, gaining firsthand experience in legislative processes.
He also served as Deputy National Legal Director in a presidential campaign council.
