Military advisers intentionally excluded President Donald Trump from the command room during the recent high-stakes extraction of a downed American airman in Iran, fearing his erratic temper would jeopardize the mission, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing a senior administration official.

The move came during a period of intense agitation for the president. Following the downing of a US jet by Iranian forces, Trump reportedly spent hours screaming at aides in a nearly empty West Wing, haunted by the specter of the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. “If you look at what happened with Jimmy Carter… it cost them the election,” Trump privately fretted, according to sources familiar with the matter.

To mitigate the risk of impulsive interference, aides opted to provide the commander in chief with updates only at “meaningful moments,” rather than the minute-by-minute tactical feeds being monitored by the National Security Council.

The extraction operation, which took place over a tense 24-hour period during Easter weekend, was plagued by the same “blood and sand” complications that have historically bedeviled US efforts in the region. While Vice President JD Vance and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles monitored the progress from remote locations, the Situation Room was a hive of activity.

Technical difficulties nearly derailed the mission when rescue aircraft became momentarily stuck in the Iranian desert sand. Simultaneously, US forces engaged in elaborate maneuvers to distract Iranian military units while the downed airman, referred to only by a specific code name, was moved toward the extraction point. The second airman was successfully recovered late Saturday night.

However, the relief in the West Wing was short-lived. By 2 a.m., the president had retired, only to wake six hours later and post a profanity-laced ultimatum on social media, threatening to leave Iran “living in Hell” unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened.

Despite his bellicose public rhetoric and threats to “destroy Iranian civilization,” the report reveals that Trump remains the primary internal obstacle to a full-scale ground invasion. Military planners have reportedly presented options for the seizure of Kharg Island, the strategic hub for 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

While advisers have allegedly assured the president the mission would be a tactical success and secure the Strait of Hormuz, Trump has flatly resisted the plan. Citing a deep-seated fear of high American casualties, Trump reportedly told his team that US soldiers would be “sitting ducks” on the island. This private caution stands in stark contrast to his public persona; while he muses openly about awarding himself the Medal of Honor for his “bravery” during a flight into Iraq, he remains paralyzed behind the scenes by the potential political and human cost of a sustained ground war.

The conflict, which began on February 28, has now surpassed the six-week deadline Trump initially promised the American public. This follows a campaign in which Trump wagered he could solve a decades-old security problem through sheer air and naval power. The president’s impulsive style is being tested by an intractable foe, as he reportedly fluctuates between belligerent and conciliatory approaches while grappling with the reality of a closed trade route and a radicalized Iranian regime.

Administration officials are now eyeing upcoming talks in Pakistan as the primary vehicle for a breakthrough, especially as Trump’s frustration grows over the lack of support from European allies. The president has expressed frequent ire toward British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, and he even dismissed a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte as a “waste of time” because the alliance would not force members to assist in the strait.

Amid this geopolitical tension, the president remains focused on optics and domestic distractions, the report noted. He has been keeping close score of destroyed Iranian targets as a metric of success while simultaneously holding multiple meetings a week regarding the construction of a new ballroom on White House grounds. Even as he manages the fragile Pakistan-brokered peace, Trump has spent time showing guests drawings of the ballroom’s foundation, acting as a general contractor for the project while the broader war effort remains without a clear exit strategy.
