…alleges political moves targeting Oyo stability
By Adeola Badru
The Association of Igbo Residents in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has reiterated its backing for Governor Seyi Makinde, warning against what it perceived as coordinated political manoeuvres aimed at unsettling the state, particularly in relation to the controversy surrounding the revered Olubadan stool.
During a press conference held yesterday in Ibadan, the group, joined by supporters of the governor, voiced apprehension over recent political developments and remarks attributed to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose.
It warned that such actions could undermine the peace and steady progress currently experienced in Oyo State.
Delivering his address on behalf of the association, Barrister Ndo Ofurenna commended the Makinde administration, describing it as inclusive, purposeful, and committed to tangible development across critical sectors.
The group criticised Fayose for what it termed ‘undue interference’ in the affairs of Oyo State, despite holding no constitutional position in the state. It argued that his involvement risks fuelling unnecessary political tension.
According to the association, there are indications that Fayose is working in concert with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other political actors to weaken the Makinde-led government, particularly by amplifying disputes linked to the Olubadan stool.
Emphasising the institution’s cultural importance, the group described the Olubadan stool as sacred and cautioned against using it as a tool for partisan politics or personal ambition.
“We condemn any attempt by any political actor to exploit traditional institutions for selfish interests,” the association stated.
The association also took issue with Fayose’s recent remarks on succession politics in the state, stressing that the selection of candidates is governed by the Electoral Act, either through consensus arrangements or primary elections.
It labelled as “unwarranted” any suggestion that Makinde had acted inconsistently, maintaining that the governor is under no obligation to impose a successor outside established democratic processes.
Addressing rumours of an impeachment plot, the group dismissed the claims as a baseless distraction, insisting that Makinde continues to enjoy widespread public confidence and citing his administration’s performance in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and workers’ welfare.
The association further noted that Oyo State has experienced relative peace, ethnic harmony, and inclusiveness under Makinde’s leadership, making it a welcoming environment for all residents, including members of the Igbo community.
It called on residents to remain calm and avoid falling prey to what it described as politically motivated propaganda capable of sowing division.
The group, similarly, urged leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rein in members whose public statements could exacerbate internal tensions within the party.
“We will not fold our arms and allow external forces to sow discord in a state where unity has been carefully nurtured,” the group said.
Reaffirming its backing for the governor, the association pledged its continued commitment to peace, unity, and sustained development in Oyo State.
Signatories to the statement included John Idoko (Enugu), Ogochukwu Ogbonna (Ebonyi), Barr. Ndo Ofurenna (Imo), Ukachi Clement (Imo/Oyo), Valentine Chukwu (Anambra), and Kingsley Ike (Abia).
