Activist Omoyele Sowore has provided an update on the ongoing legal battle involving cryptocurrency entrepreneur Blord and social media critic VeryDarkMan.
Blord was recently arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges including criminal conspiracy, impersonation, and the alleged unauthorised use of VeryDarkMan’s image, which was reportedly placed on a billboard without permission. He was subsequently remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre, a development that sparked widespread reactions online.
According to Sowore, Blord’s legal team has already submitted a bail application, while the police filed a counter-affidavit opposing the request. He further disclosed that the defence has now responded with a “further and better affidavit” as of Monday, April 13, 2026, to strengthen their argument. However, a date for the bail hearing has not yet been assigned by the court.
Sowore explained that the delay in proceedings was influenced by the timing of the arrest, which occurred around the Easter holidays. He noted that judicial activities were disrupted as judges went on recess and have only recently resumed sittings, though new cases may not be immediately addressed.
“The lawyers to Blord have filed a bail application. The police have also filed a counter-affidavit to oppose this bail. And the lawyers have indicated this morning that they have also filed a further and better affidavit. So that is the status of the case.”
He also quoted the legal position in the case, saying the defence has formally applied for bail, while the police continue to oppose it through their filings.
“But for those who want to know the background to why it took this long, this was timed to coincide with the Easter holidays. So that Blord will not get to a quick date. And after the Easter holidays, all the judges went on vacation. And they are resuming today. But resuming today doesn’t mean that they will take cases from today.”
The activist criticised the police for resisting bail in what he believes should not have escalated to a full trial, suggesting that their approach reflects continuity in practice despite leadership changes at the police force.
Sowore further reassured the public that Blord is in stable condition and remains hopeful as the legal process continues.
“Unfortunately, and I mean this unfortunately, the police filed a counter in a case that shouldn’t have come to court in the first place. And that is why we are suspicious that even when you have a new police inspector general, they are not different from the old ones. Because they are just all part and parcel of the old system of oppression.”
