CAIRO, Egypt — Egypt has launched the construction of a new 60-passenger electric river bus designed to modernise urban water transport in Cairo and support the country’s transition toward cleaner mobility solutions.
The project is being led by the Suez Canal Authority and is currently under construction at the South Red Sea Shipyard in Safaga, one of Egypt’s key maritime manufacturing facilities.
The river bus is designed as a fully electric passenger vessel intended for use along the Nile within Greater Cairo. According to project details, the vessel measures 19 metres in length and 5.5 metres in width, and will be powered by a 75-kilowatt electric propulsion system.
Construction has already reached an advanced stage, with steel cutting completed and hull assembly currently in progress at the Safaga shipyard.
The project is being developed under strict international maritime standards, with oversight from the classification society RINA (Registro Italiano Navale). This supervision is intended to ensure the vessel meets global safety, environmental, and engineering requirements.
Officials involved in the project say the initiative reflects Egypt’s growing emphasis on aligning domestic shipbuilding with international best practices.
The electric river bus is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to reduce emissions and improve transportation efficiency in densely populated urban centres such as Cairo.
