Since he first emerged into national prominence, Professor Pat Utomi has consistently projected himself as a leading authority on economics and governance, often positioning his views as definitive prescriptions for Nigeria’s development path.

Over the years, Utomi has maintained an active presence in public discourse, offering commentary on national politics and economic policy. He frequently draws comparisons with countries such as South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Chile to support his arguments on how Nigeria’s political economy should evolve. While his academic grounding in economic theory is widely acknowledged, critics argue that theoretical knowledge does not always translate seamlessly into practical governance outcomes.

Utomi has also had opportunities to test his ideas in leadership roles, including his time as Managing Director and Chief Executive of Volkswagen of Nigeria, as well as his involvement with the defunct BankPHB. Critics point to these experiences as evidence that his record in institutional leadership did not match the expectations often associated with his public intellectual image.

In the case of BankPHB, allegations of corporate governance failures and insider-related abuses were reported in the aftermath of its collapse, with investigations revealing significant financial mismanagement within the institution. Former executives of the bank, including its then Chief Executive Officer, faced legal consequences for their roles in the bank’s downfall. Utomi, who served on the board, has also been associated in public commentary with the period of instability that led to the institution’s collapse.

Questions have also been raised in political circles regarding Utomi’s involvement in civic advocacy groups, following claims by former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun that an organization linked to him allegedly offered an unsolicited award in circumstances some interpreted as inappropriate influence-seeking. These allegations remain part of public debate around his career.

Beyond these controversies, Utomi has remained a recurring voice in electoral and governance discussions, particularly during election cycles. He has often taken strong positions on candidates and political outcomes, including the 2023 general elections, where he publicly expressed confidence in his preferred candidate before official results were announced.

As another election season approaches, Utomi has continued to voice criticism of the current administration and its economic policies. Following a recent political gathering of a faction within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja, he appeared in media interviews where he described aspects of the federal government’s reform agenda in harsh terms, including referring to it as ineffective and likening it to a “Ponzi scheme.”

He has also taken out media space to publicly criticise President Bola Tinubu’s economic direction, despite previously being associated in different periods with political engagements and endorsements involving the same political leadership.

According to Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Utomi’s shifting positions reflect a pattern of strong public commentary that changes depending on political alignment and personal interest. Ajayi argued that when his preferred political outcomes are not realised, Utomi tends to adopt a critical posture framed as national concern.

Ajayi further suggested that it is time for Utomi to adopt a more reflective stance in national discourse and allow space for others, rather than consistently positioning himself at the centre of political and economic debates.
