A young man is currently nursing injuries after a farm owner in Kogi State allegedly flogged him repeatedly with a machete for plucking cashew nuts from his farm without permission.….......
The incident happened earlier this week and has since caused serious tension in the community where it took place.
Eyewitnesses say the farm owner caught the young man picking cashew fruits from his plantation and, instead of settling the matter quietly, picked up a machete and used it to beat him several times.
A source who did not want to be named described exactly what happened.
“He was just plucking the cashew when the owner showed up. Instead of handling it calmly, he picked up a machete and started beating him,” the source said.
The young man received several visible injuries from the beating. Some people around the area quickly stepped in to stop the attack before it got worse. After the incident, sympathisers helped the victim, but it is not yet known whether he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The attack has caused strong reactions among people living in the area. Many have condemned the farm owner’s actions, saying that no matter what the young man did, beating someone with a machete is against the law and cannot be justified.
However, some others have spoken up for the farm owner, saying that farmers in the area are tired of people repeatedly stealing from their farms and that authorities rarely do anything to help them.
While the frustration of farmers is understandable, community observers have warned that nobody has the right to take the law into their own hands, no matter how angry they are.
