Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has apologised after making a false accusation against pop singer Chappell Roan, describing the incident as a misunderstanding.
The controversy began during a festival weekend in Brazil, where Jorginho initially claimed that a security guard linked to Roan had approached and frightened his 11-year-old stepdaughter.
The allegation quickly gained traction online, drawing criticism towards the singer.
However, after reviewing new information, Jorginho reversed his position, stating that his earlier claim was based on incomplete details.
According to BBC Sport, Jorginho said: “After learning more about what actually happened, I realize I made a mistake.
“The person involved was not part of Chappell Roan’s team.”
He explained that his initial reaction was driven by concern.
He said: “In the moment, I was trying to protect my family, but I spoke too soon without having all the facts.”
Jorginho also apologised for the consequences of his comments.
He said: “I regret what was said and any negativity it brought.
“This was a misunderstanding, and I want to make that clear.”
Roan had earlier denied any involvement and expressed sympathy over the situation, stating she had no knowledge of the encounter at the time.
Jorginho urged restraint following the clarification.
He said: “There’s no need for hate toward anyone. Now that everything is clear, we can put this behind us.”
The incident, which briefly sparked online backlash, has now been resolved, with both sides indicating that the confusion stemmed from mistaken assumptions rather than deliberate action.
