Pope Leo XIV has dismissed claims that his recent comments were aimed at former US President Donald Trump, saying they were misinterpreted.
The pontiff explained that a speech he delivered in Cameroon had been prepared long before Trump publicly stated he was “not a big fan” of the American pope.
Speaking to journalists while travelling to Angola, Pope Leo said the timing of both remarks created a false impression of a direct exchange.
“And yet it was perceived as if I were trying to start a new debate with the president, which doesn’t interest me at all,” he said.
The pope had earlier made reference to “tyrants” disrupting global stability, a comment that quickly drew attention and was linked to Trump’s criticism.
He, however, insisted that his message was not directed at any individual, stressing that his focus remains on wider global concerns.
During the same trip, Pope Leo also spoke on the risks tied to artificial intelligence, warning about its growing influence on society.
“The challenge posed by these systems is greater than it appears: it is not just about the use of new technologies, but about the gradual replacement of reality by its simulation,” he said.
He warned that misuse of such technology could deepen divisions and weaken trust in truth.
“In this way, polarisation, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.”
The remarks are part of his ongoing 11-day tour of Africa, where he has taken a stronger stance on global issues, including peace, technology and environmental impact.
