Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has reacted strongly to the resignation of Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, describing the development as a welcome move amid ongoing criticisms of the country’s electricity challenges.
Adelabu formally tendered his resignation in a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that he would step down effective April 30, 2026, to focus on his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
Reacting via X, Adeyanju questioned the timing and credibility of the resignation, while expressing frustration over the state of the power sector. In his remarks, he made critical references to the minister’s performance, reflecting broader public dissatisfaction with electricity supply in Nigeria.
The activist’s reaction comes amid widespread debate over Adelabu’s tenure, which saw the implementation of reforms under the Electricity Act 2023 and reported improvements in generation capacity. However, persistent outages and grid instability have continued to draw criticism from citizens and stakeholders.
Adelabu, in his resignation, maintained that his decision aligns with the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which requires political appointees to step down before contesting elections. He also highlighted achievements during his tenure, including increased power generation and infrastructure upgrades.
