The life and legacy of Saartjie Baartman have re-emerged in global cultural conversations, following renewed references to her story in contemporary art and commentary.
Baartman, born in 1789 in present-day South Africa, was a member of the Indigenous Khoikhoi community. In 1810, she was taken to England under false promises of employment, but was instead exhibited before paying audiences due to her physical features, which European audiences deemed “exotic.”
Historians say her treatment reflected the deeply entrenched racial and colonial attitudes of the 19th century. She was subjected to public display, humiliation, and invasive scrutiny throughout her time in Europe.
Baartman died in 1815 at the age of 26. After her death, her body was dissected, and her remains were displayed for decades in a museum in Paris, further underscoring the extent of her exploitation.
Her remains were only returned to South Africa in 2002, where she was finally given a dignified burial, nearly two centuries after her death.
The renewed attention to Baartman’s story comes amid discussions around artistic expression and historical memory, particularly following commentary linked to American singer Erykah Badu.
