A High Court in Gombe State has sentenced an 18-year-old, Mustapha Isah, to death by hanging for the murder of a 58-year-old woman, marking a significant ruling in the state’s criminal justice system.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Abdulhamid-Mohammed Yakubu, who found the defendant guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death. The court ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
In his ruling, the judge held that the evidence presented clearly established that the accused intentionally caused the death of the victim, leaving no room for doubt under the law.
The victim, identified as Aishatu Abdullahi, popularly known as Damori, was reportedly attacked in her residence in the Jekadafari area of Gombe.
According to court records, the incident occurred on the night of October 20, 2023. The convict was said to have unlawfully entered the woman’s home and stabbed her, inflicting injuries that led to her death.
Justice Yakubu emphasized the seriousness of the offence, noting that the unlawful taking of human life remains one of the gravest crimes under Nigerian law. He stated that the sentence reflects both the weight of the crime and the need to serve as a deterrent to others.
Under Nigerian law, murder classified as culpable homicide is punishable by death. While the sentence is handed down by courts, its execution is subject to legal procedures, including the prerogative of mercy exercised by state authorities.
