According to a report by The Cable on Monday, April 13, 2026, former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has formally declared his intention to contest the Delta North senatorial seat in the 2027 general election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).….......
Okowa made the announcement during a meeting with political leaders from the Delta North senatorial district held at his residence in Asaba. The gathering brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including former and serving legislators, political office holders, and representatives from the nine local government areas that make up the district.
The meeting was led by Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, and included prominent political figures such as former House of Representatives member Ndudi Elumelu, as well as Nnamdi Ezechi, who represents Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
During the meeting, a formal motion calling on Okowa to enter the senatorial race was moved by Elumelu and seconded by Ezechi. The proposal reportedly received unanimous endorsement from all leaders present, who described the former governor as a highly experienced administrator with a long history of public service.
Supporters at the gathering said Okowa’s previous experience as both a senator and a state governor placed him in a strong position to provide effective representation for Delta North at the national level. They also praised his reputation as a consensus-driven political figure capable of uniting diverse interests within the district.
In his response, Okowa expressed appreciation for the overwhelming backing from political leaders and community stakeholders, describing the gesture as both humbling and encouraging.
He stated that he felt deeply honoured by the level of support shown and said the collective decision of the leaders left him with little choice but to accept the call to contest.
According to him, the consultation process played an important role in his decision-making, as he initially intended to reach out more broadly to political leaders across the district before making any formal declaration.
“I am grateful for this show of confidence and unity. Given the calibre of individuals present and the agreement we have reached, I accept the invitation to contest for the Senate seat representing Delta North,” he said.
Okowa added that political engagement remains a continuous learning process, noting that he would continue to draw lessons from experience and consultation as he prepares for the electoral contest.
He also expressed gratitude to the people of Anioma, acknowledging their past support during his earlier political campaigns, including his 2011 senatorial bid and subsequent governorship elections.
In a notable part of his remarks, the former governor also offered an apology to constituents over what he described as a political misjudgment in supporting the emergence of Senator Ned Nwoko, who currently represents Delta North in the Senate. He did not go into further detail but described the decision as a “mistake” in hindsight.
