ABUJA — Senator Ireti Kingibe on Tuesday warned that Nigeria is sliding deeper into crisis, with rising insecurity, hardship and failing public services pushing many to the brink, saying the country is now ‘in meltdown’ and no longer working for its people.

According to her, frustration is building across the country as basic needs such as electricity, food and healthcare remain out of reach for many, sharpening public anger and giving fresh urgency to opposition voices.

Kingibe, a senator and member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), spoke on behalf of the party’s National Assembly members at the ADC National Convention in Abuja.

She said, “As members of the National Assembly, we are custodians of the law and watchdogs of democracy. We may not be many; 10 Senators and 25 members of the House of Representatives, but we have remained steadfast and resolute with this great party, the African Democratic Congress.

“The well-being of the people is the true measure of any government. Today, we are confronted with unprecedented insecurity: no light, no food, erratic telecommunications, and inadequate medical care. Indeed, we are witnessing a country in clear meltdown, a country that is no longer aligned with the interests of its people.”

She said the ADC sees itself as speaking for ordinary Nigerians and is positioning itself as an alternative to the current direction of governance.

“It is evident that those of us in the African Democratic Congress are the true representatives of the people. We stand with them, we support them, and we are here to help rescue them,” Kingibe said.

She also stressed that democracy cannot function without a strong opposition, warning against a system where one side dominates unchecked.

Despite mounting pressure, she said, opposition lawmakers remain in place and committed to their role.

“National Assembly members have faced intimidation and harassment, yet we remain here. Together, we will work, we will persevere, and we will move forward to victory,” she said.

She called for resilience, urging party members to stay the course despite the challenges.
