According to a report by The Sun, on Monday April 13, 2026, an Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has issued a strong political message ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling for more Muslim representation in the South West region of Nigeria.….......
The group made its position known through its Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, the statement focused on the need for political parties to present Muslim candidates for governorship positions in South West states if they expect to receive support from Muslim voters.
MURIC stated that political inclusion has become a key issue in the region, it argued that Muslims should be given fair opportunities in leadership, especially at the state executive level, according to the group, this would help to reduce feelings of exclusion and promote balance in governance.
The organisation specifically mentioned that Muslim candidates should emerge as governors in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Osun states and suggested that in Ekiti and Ondo states, political parties should ensure that Muslims are considered for deputy governorship positions.
MURIC claimed that recent political arrangements in the region have not reflected equal representation, it said that Muslims, despite being a significant population group in Yorubaland, have not had enough access to top political offices since the last election cycle.
The group argued that political appointments in some states have favoured one religious group more than the other, it said this situation has affected access to opportunities such as employment, government contracts, and political appointments.
The group insisted that any party that ignores Muslim representation in its governorship choices should not expect support from Muslim voters in the South West.
”Although Muslims constitute the majority in Yorubaland, any political party which fails to present a Muslim as its gubernatorial candidate should kiss Muslim votes goodbye,” he said.
