A political stakeholder, Ibrahim H. Abdulkarim, has called on leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other opposition groups to adopt Peter Obi as a unified presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an open letter addressed to opposition figures, Abdulkarim argued that Nigeria is at a “defining crossroads,” citing economic hardship, insecurity, and declining public trust under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He maintained that the 2027 election presents an opportunity not just to field candidates, but to build a strong coalition capable of defeating the ruling party through unity and mass mobilization.
The letter highlighted Obi’s perceived strengths, including his cross-regional appeal, which Abdulkarim said could help bridge long-standing ethnic and religious divides. He described the former Anambra State governor as a candidate capable of fostering national unity and healing.
Abdulkarim also pointed to Obi’s popularity among young voters, noting that his campaign style and digital engagement could drive unprecedented participation in the electoral process. According to him, such momentum could reshape voter turnout and energize previously disengaged demographics.
The author further emphasized what he described as Obi’s issue-based campaign approach, focusing on key sectors such as security, education, and economic reform. He argued that a lean, policy-driven campaign would resonate with voters seeking alternatives to traditional money-driven politics.
In addition, the letter cited Obi’s grassroots support base, describing it as organic and less susceptible to political manipulation, as well as his connections with Nigerians in the diaspora, which could boost both campaign resources and international confidence.
Abdulkarim concluded by urging opposition leaders to act decisively, stressing that a united front behind a single candidate could significantly improve their chances in 2027.
