The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo state has dismissed the Ibadan opposition summit, saying participants are “wasting their time”.
The party, in a statement on Sunday by Olawale Sadare, its spokesman, described attendees as lacking the capacity to challenge the ruling party.
“They are just wasting their time as it is just impossible for them to catch up with a man who is several kilometres ahead of them in a marathon,” he said.
The Oyo APC spokesman added that opposition figures do not possess “an iota of seriousness” to defeat the president.
The summit, hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo, brought together opposition leaders to discuss strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sadare criticised the Oyo state chief executive, describing him as a “naive and deceitful political player”.
“It is even shameful that Governor Makinde, who has established himself as a naive and deceitful political player, is now the moral compass for some politicians who have recorded irredeemable failures in politics and governance in the past.
“As it stands now, they have gathered only palm fronds to fix a damaged vehicle, even as they look in the direction of fishermen for technical support,” he said.
The APC also warned against alleged threats linked to remarks attributed to the governor at the Ibadan summit.
“The ‘Operation Wetie’ threat, which came from Gov. Makinde, would not be taken with a pinch of salt as it was a revelation, but he should realise that no unrest or violence will mar the 2027 general elections,” Sadare said.
The APC chieftain said the elections would be peaceful and credible, adding that Governor Makinde would be held accountable for alleged abuse of office and corruption.
The summit was attended by opposition figures including African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftains, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi.
