Cracks are beginning to show within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as ongoing efforts to produce a consensus presidential candidate for 2027 face increasing strain, pushing the party closer to adopting direct primaries.
The shift comes amid growing mobilisation for mass membership registration, driven by the understanding that if consensus talks fail, the party will proceed with a primary election open to all verified members. Under this system, the decision on the party’s presidential candidate would rest with its nationwide membership rather than a limited group of delegates.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a key figure within the ADC, has indicated that consensus remains the preferred option, but made it clear that the party is prepared to conduct primaries if no agreement is reached among aspirants.
The inability to settle on a single candidate has exposed internal divisions, with multiple interests and political blocs positioning ahead of the 2027 race. The ADC has in recent months attracted several high-profile figures, including Peter Obi, intensifying competition within the party and complicating consensus efforts.
As a result, attention has shifted to the party’s membership base, with increasing calls for Nigerians to register and participate in the process. Ongoing registration efforts, both online and at ward level, are aimed at building a verifiable structure capable of supporting a nationwide primary if required.
