Homa Bay man pays dowry for late wife in colourful ceremony 2 years after her death

“Till death do us part” are words many people hear at weddings, only to forget them soon after the reception begins. However, for some, they mark the beginning of a love story that endures beyond loss.

Peter Onundo’s story of love and grief did not begin at the altar, but many years earlier when he was just a Class Six boy.

He met the love of his life, Sharon Ojuok, while in primary school, never knowing she would one day become the woman who would forever change his life.

Speaking to NgGossips, Onundo said he began dating Sharon after fate brought them together again at Egerton University in 2019.

He was in his final semester while Sharon had just joined as a first-year student.

Do Peter Onundo and late wife have a child?

“I did not approach her immediately, but slowly we became friends. We officially started dating in 2021 after I had finished school. Everything was going well, and then we got pregnant in 2022,” he said.

Still being in school, Sharon panicked, fearing what her father would say about her becoming pregnant while still a student.

However, Peter assured her that he would stand by her and made plans to visit her home for an introduction.

“I did not know much about tradition, but I rallied a few family members and we went to her home on 30 September 2022, just so they would know who had been dating their daughter. From then on, she moved into my house as I was already working while she was in her second year,” said Peter.

She continued with her studies as they enjoyed their union, and everything went smoothly, including Peter’s work life.

In February 2023, the couple welcomed their bundle of joy, a beautiful baby girl, who also came with blessings as life was going well and Peter’s business was thriving, meaning a good financial flow.

How did Sharon Ojuok die?

Peter fondly recalled the happy moments he shared with his beloved wife and little daughter until the day her health problems began.

“We were on holiday in Mombasa when she suddenly fainted and dropped our baby. She had been bleeding, but we were told it was due to hormonal imbalance after giving birth. So when she fainted, I became worried and decided we should head back to Nakuru so she could receive proper medical care,” he said.

Days later, Sharon was admitted to a hospital in Nakuru, where doctors discovered a mass in her abdomen. Upon further tests, they found that she had cervical cancer.

Their lives changed immediately after the diagnosis as they moved from one doctor to another, seeking second opinions and looking for ways to fight the deadly disease.

Throughout the battle with cancer, Peter remained by his wife’s side through hospital visits, tests, and scans.

He also acknowledged the role their families played while Sharon was ill, both financially and emotionally.

“It was a long battle and involved moving from different hospitals, especially after one doctor said it was not cancer but something else. We had hope that she was going to beat the disease, and the bleeding would come and go. Sometimes she was very well, and at other times things were not okay,” he narrated.

The 24-year-old mother of one put up a brave fight but eventually succumbed in November 2024, leaving behind her three-year-old daughter and beloved husband.

While going through that painful period, Peter recalled the grace and love he received from Sharon’s family, especially her sisters and father.

Despite not having paid her bride price, Sharon’s father allowed him to bury his daughter at their home. He recalled a meeting that was held when his wife passed away to make burial preparations.

He had a feeling his father-in-law would insist on burying his daughter because he was yet to officially marry her but the elderly man surprise him.

“My wife’s father shed tears, looked at me, and said we have all struggled through this journey, and if we had known it would end in death, maybe we would not have gone through all this stress. ‘Take your wife home’ thats what he told me,” he recounted.

Two years later, Peter made the bold decision to honour his late wife and her father. He planned with his close friends and bought seven cows and a goat to officially seal their union, even in death.

They held a colourful ceremony filled with mixed emotions, both joy and sorrow.

The father of one recalled the moment they all broke down in tears inside Sharon’s mother’s house, while her father wished she were alive to witness the beautiful moment unfold.

He admitted feeling a mix of anger, sorrow, and pain, wishing his wife had been there to welcome him. To the grieving widower, the reality of Sharon’s bride price being paid in her absence brought back all the painful memories.

“It was emotional, but in between we danced and celebrated the day. Her father was grateful and thanked me for the gesture, not knowing I mainly did it for him, not even for Sharon,” he said.

The father of one said Sharon’s dad had been a blessing to him, a man who made things easier and stood by them even when his wife was ill.

“There is a place in heaven for that man. Even after his daughter’s death, he has been a father to me. He even told me that if he ever dies, I should come and attend his funeral. He said he would never want me to miss it,” he said.

In other news, NgGossips reported that the family of slain teacher Albert Ojwang fulfilled his wish by paying his widow, Nevnina Onyango’s, bride price.

Nevnina’s bride price was paid months after her husband was brutally murdered while in police custody.

The young widow shared an emotional message about the promise made by her late husband and how she felt after his family honoured their union.
