The President of the Association of African Traditional Religion Worshippers of Nigeria, Adesegun Elegushi, has called on adherents of African traditional religion to uphold integrity, discipline, and moral responsibility, stressing that their conduct directly shapes public perception of the faith.
Speaking at a recent gathering, High Chief Elegushi urged practitioners to avoid actions capable of bringing the religion into disrepute. He emphasized that honesty, transparency, and uprightness must remain core values, noting that consistent ethical behavior will not only preserve the dignity of traditional practices but also attract broader acceptance.
He described African traditional religion as a heritage deeply rooted in culture and spirituality, adding that its true essence must be reflected in the lifestyle of its followers. According to him, practitioners who live responsibly serve as ambassadors of the faith and help strengthen societal respect for it.
Also speaking, the 1st Vice President of the association, Folusho Adeogun-Oga, highlighted the importance of personal and environmental cleanliness as a key spiritual value. She urged adherents to embrace purity in both their physical environment and personal conduct, reinforcing the principle that cleanliness is closely tied to godliness.
Adeogun-Oga further encouraged unity, love, and mutual respect among members, warning against actions that could put practitioners at odds with government authorities. She stressed that lawful conduct is vital for the continued growth and acceptance of the religion.
Both leaders concluded that the future of African traditional religion depends on the collective commitment of its followers to ethical living, cultural preservation, and peaceful coexistence within society.
