Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed four soldiers and one civilian during an attack on Mussa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident reportedly occurred around midday on Wednesday when armed attackers attempted to infiltrate the community, triggering a gun battle with Nigerian troops.
Chairman of the local government, Mada Saidu, confirmed the attack, stating that both military personnel and a civilian woman lost their lives.
“There was an attack at Mussa ward yesterday afternoon. They killed one civilian, a lady, and four soldiers,” he said.
Military sources said the troops, drawn from the 115 Task Force Battalion, engaged the attackers in a bid to prevent them from entering the town.
According to one source, the soldiers resisted the assault despite being outnumbered in what appeared to be a coordinated attempt to breach the community’s defences.
“The insurgents were not many, but it was a coordinated attack aimed at infiltrating the town. The troops stood their ground, but unfortunately, four of them were killed,” the source said.
Residents reported intense gunfire that caused panic, forcing many to flee their homes temporarily.
One resident said the attackers appeared intent on causing widespread destruction but were held back by the military response.
The latest incident adds to ongoing security challenges in Borno State, which continues to experience repeated attacks on both civilian settlements and security formations.
