The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is facing mounting public scrutiny following viral allegations of ethnic bias in its process of appointing pastors.
The controversy emerged after an X user, @D_goodybag, shared claims that her father allowed an RCCG parish to operate rent-free on his property for over 15 years, providing additional support for church activities. She alleged that when a pastoral position became available, her father was overlooked because he and his family were not registered members, while another candidate of Yoruba origin was appointed.
According to her account, the decision led to a fallout with the church, resulting in the removal of church property from the premises and a complete withdrawal of support by the family.
The claims, though unverified, have sparked widespread debate across social media platforms, with several users sharing similar experiences and raising concerns about alleged ethnic preferences within the church’s leadership structure.
Some commentators pointed to what they described as a recurring pattern, particularly in southern Nigeria, where major RCCG branches are often led by Yoruba pastors regardless of the ethnic composition of their congregations. Others suggested that internal politics may influence leadership decisions.

However, a number of respondents defended the church, insisting that pastoral appointments are guided by spiritual qualifications, doctrinal standards, and a perceived divine calling rather than material contributions or personal affiliations.
They argued that providing property or financial support to a religious institution does not confer entitlement to leadership positions, noting that specific internal requirements, including full family participation in church activities, may also play a role in ordination decisions.
The debate has since widened to include broader discussions on leadership transparency, inclusivity, and governance within large religious organisations in Nigeria, with observers calling for clarity on appointment processes to address growing public concerns.
As reactions continue, RCCG has yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations.
