A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kefas Ropshik, has indicated interest in the 2027 governorship election in Plateau State, promising to address insecurity and youth unemployment.
Ropshik made his intention known on Sunday while addressing supporters in his local government area, saying the state urgently needs solutions to its security and economic challenges.
The development comes amid recurring violence in parts of Plateau, where attacks linked to communal tensions and disputes over land have led to loss of lives and displacement of residents, especially in Mangu, Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the PDP chieftain said although the gathering was not his official declaration, the turnout showed growing support for his ambition.
“I am even surprised at the mammoth turnout, despite the fact that this is not an official declaration yet.
“I am very sure that my people and the good people of Plateau State want me, and I am fully prepared to make them proud,” he said.
Speaking on insecurity, Ropshik said restoring safety across the state would be his top priority.
He said,”Our state is blessed, but our people are hurting. Insecurity has taken too many lives, destroyed livelihoods, and created fear in our communities.
“If given the mandate, I will prioritise the protection of lives and property as the foundation for every other development.
“We will deploy a people-driven security architecture that involves communities, traditional institutions, and security agencies working together. Plateau must be safe again for farmers, traders, students, and investors.”
On unemployment, the PDP chieftain said his administration would focus on empowering youths through skills development and support for businesses.
He said,”Youth unemployment is not just an economic issue; it is a security risk, we will invest in skills acquisition, support small and medium enterprises, and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
“Our young people must be productively engaged and empowered to build their future here in Plateau.”
Ropshik also promised to improve infrastructure across the state, stressing the need for inclusive development.
According to him, “We cannot talk about development without roads, schools, healthcare, and basic amenities. My administration will focus on equitable distribution of projects to ensure no community is left behind.
“Development must be inclusive and people-centred.”
He added that the support he received at the gathering reflected the desire of the people for change.
He said,”I am humbled by the overwhelming support. This is not about me alone; it is about the collective aspiration of Plateau people for a safer, more prosperous future.”
The statement noted that supporters at the event backed his plans, insisting that urgent action was needed to address insecurity and revive economic activities in the state.
