The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has moved to reassure the public following the confirmation of a new COVID-19 case in Cross River State, stating that there is no evidence of widespread transmission at this time.
In a statement issued by its Director-General, Jide Idris, the agency said all identified contacts of the confirmed case are being actively traced and monitored, while response measures have already been activated.
“All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately, and there is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission,” the NCDC said.
The case was confirmed earlier by the Cross River State government, years after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the global COVID-19 emergency phase.
According to the state’s Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, the index case is a Chinese national working in Akamkpa Local Government Area who arrived in Nigeria on March 17 and later developed symptoms consistent with the virus.
The NCDC confirmed that the patient has been isolated and is receiving treatment in line with standard protocols.

The public health agency, alongside partners and the state Ministry of Health, has since activated surveillance systems, contact tracing, and infection prevention and control measures to contain any potential spread.
“We continue to maintain routine surveillance for COVID-19 and other respiratory infections,” the agency added.
Nigerians have been advised to maintain basic preventive measures, including regular handwashing, proper respiratory hygiene, and seeking medical attention when unwell.
COVID-19, first identified in 2019, triggered a global pandemic that led to millions of deaths and widespread economic disruption.
Nigeria recorded over 266,000 confirmed cases and more than 3,000 deaths during the height of the outbreak, prompting nationwide lockdowns and emergency health responses.
Health authorities have, however, urged calm, stressing that the current situation remains under control.
