A 46-year-old man, Imeh Sunday, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for incestuous rape.
The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by Family Court 2 sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, presided over by Justice Blessing Egwu.
Justice Egwu handed down the maximum sentence after what the court described as overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution.
The case was prosecuted with the support of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a non-governmental organisation focused on protecting the rights of children and indigent women.
Speaking shortly after the judgment, Principal Counsel of BRCI, James Ibor (Esq.), said the conviction was part of ongoing efforts to secure justice for survivors of sexual violence in the state.
He disclosed that the organisation had secured multiple convictions in rape-related cases in Cross River State over the past few months.
Ibor also commended the survivor, her family, law enforcement authorities, and judicial officers for their roles in ensuring justice was served.
He praised the cooperation of the Attorney-General of the state, Ededem Charles Ani, the Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua, as well as staff and volunteers of BRCI for their support in the case and the survivor’s recovery process.
