When two people get married, they often hope and pray their union will last until death separates them, but that was not the case for this couple.

Imani Ngaile has been left heartbroken after his marriage crumbled, leaving him solely responsible for their three children.

Ngaile painfully revealed that his wife left him after 18 years, partly due to the strain of caring for one of their children who has a disability.

He said she expressed that she was overwhelmed and could no longer continue.

He tried to convince her to stay, considering their long marriage and shared responsibilities, but she remained firm in her decision.

Why did Ngaile’s wife leave?

“I cannot force someone who wants to leave to stay. She said her soul was troubled. I gave her three months to reconsider her decision. She came back, but with the same resolve,” he said.

Ngaile noted that he attempted to involve the courts and community elders, but there was no breakthrough in efforts to reconcile with his wife.

He became convinced that she was unwilling to return and continue caring for their daughter with a disability, as she felt she could no longer cope.

“We were living peacefully. We had never faced such a challenge before. Whenever I asked her if we could build a house, she always refused. When she left, she took KSh 80,000,”Ngaile shared.

The single father of three said his wife’s behaviour had changed before she left, noting that she had become increasingly hostile and would even insult elders, including his mother.

His biggest challenge now is providing for his three children without a reliable support system, adding that his relatives are also financially constrained.

However, he expressed gratitude to his neighbours, who have stepped in to support him from time to time, understanding the burden he carries.

“The help my neighbours give me includes washing my daughter’s clothes and even bathing her. Sometimes when I am out working late, they provide food for my family. My daughter was born healthy, but after two years her condition began to deteriorate. I have taken her to hospitals, but doctors say they do not know the root cause. She has been given various medications, but nothing seems to work,” Ngaile said.

Marriage counsellor Jane Murimi Mugo advised married couples to honour their vows despite the challenges they experience in their union.

“When they said, ‘Till death do us part’, they were not just reciting something out in the air. They were committing to one another that, come what may, they would stick with one another until the end. The problem is that people do not know problems would come and that their words would be tested. There is no marriage that has no problems. The adversities may be different, but all unions have issues. Trust me,” she told NgGossips.
