Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, a move that affects many prepaid subscribers across the country.

The decision means that customers who previously relied on borrowing airtime or data will no longer be able to access those services for now.

The credit option had allowed eligible users to make calls or browse even when they had no balance, with repayment deducted during their next recharge.

Despite the suspension, the telecom provider assured customers that regular services remain unaffected. Subscribers can still buy airtime and data through the usual channels without any disruption. The company stressed that its core network operations and service delivery nationwide will continue as normal.

Airtel explained that the move is part of ongoing adjustments within its system. It noted that the change is temporary and will not significantly affect overall user experience.

Speaking on the development, the company’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, said, “This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

Industry observers say the decision may be connected to regulatory or operational reviews within the telecommunications sector, although the company did not give specific details.

The telecom firm added that it is monitoring the situation closely and will inform customers once there are updates regarding the reinstatement of the service.

For now, millions of Airtel users will have to depend on direct recharge options as the credit feature remains unavailable.
