A former Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Gwarzo, has declared his intention to contest the Kano North Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections.

Gwarzo’s declaration signals a potential political contest with the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, who currently represents the district.

Speaking while addressing supporters in Kano, Gwarzo said his decision followed wide consultations and calls from constituents urging him to join the race.

He noted that his extensive experience in public service places him in a strong position to effectively represent the people of Kano North.

The former deputy governor said he had served as chairman of Gwarzo Local Government for several terms and held key positions at both state and federal levels.

“I believe I have garnered the necessary experience to provide quality representation that will benefit our people and the state,” he said.

Gwarzo highlighted his track record in youth empowerment, citing the establishment of a vocational training centre where beneficiaries receive monthly stipends.

He disclosed plans to replicate the initiative across the 18 local government areas of the senatorial district as part of efforts to address unemployment and curb social vices.

He further stated that his tenure in public office saw the execution of critical infrastructural projects, including rural electrification and skills acquisition programmes.

The former minister commended President Bola Tinubu for ongoing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the Nigeria Education Loan Fund and major infrastructure projects, such as the Kano–Kaduna–Abuja Highway and the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline.

Reflecting on his time in office between 2023 and 2024, Gwarzo said he contributed to key housing sector reforms, including the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates initiative, as well as policy interventions aimed at improving housing delivery.

Meanwhile, a former commissioner and local government Chairman, Muntari Yakasai, has advised Governor Abba Yusuf to consider appointing Murtala Garo as the substantive deputy governor, noting that such a move would enhance governance and stability in the state.
