Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, may step down in order to pursue his goal of becoming governor of Oyo State, barring a last-minute change in plans.
Adelabu will step down from his role either today or by the end of the week, according to sources close to the president and the minister who spoke with The NGGOSSIPS.
Adelabu met President Tinubu on Tuesday to share his political aspirations in Oyo State, despite the fact that his resignation comes after the Federal Government’s March 31 deadline for political appointees to step down.
The minister was seen by the NGGOSSIPS at the Villa, but he did not interact with reporters following the meeting.
“He will resign, but I don’t know if it is Wednesday or later in the week,” a minister’s close associate stated. However, he will undoubtedly step down.
“He has seen the President, and he has told him about his ambition,” he continued. The President had given him his blessing. Additionally, he gave the President an update on his actions during the previous 2.5 years.
The NGGOSSIPS learned that the President met with Chief Adebisi Akande, a former Osun State governor and leader of the All Progressives Congress, and Chief Pius Akinyelure, a former chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd.
Adelabu, who led the party’s 2019 governorship campaign and ran on the Accord platform in 2023, has made no secret of his desire to run on the APC platform in the 2027 election.
The APC said on Monday that its governorship primary would take place on May 23, 2026, with a N50 million fee for potential candidates.
The forms will be available for purchase from April 25 until May 2.
He would join the list of APC candidates for governor, along with Sarafadeen Alli, the senator from Oyo South Senatorial District, and Oyedele Alao, also known as Allow Alao, if he eventually steps down and announces his intention to run.
