25-year-old woman undergoes tubal ligation to avoid having kids, shares cost

Miss Maryash, a 25-year-old woman, has made a decision most of her peers would fear making or would prefer to avoid.

Maryash underwent tubal ligation when she was just 24 years old, a move she says she has never regretted.

The young woman narrated her story while sharing the reasons she chose the procedure, which is often considered controversial.

“I had fibroids and needed surgery to remove them, so I asked my doctor to cut my tubes during the surgery,” she said.

Why did Miss Maryash undergo tubal ligation?

The 24-year-old explained that she realised some time ago that she was not interested in having children and decided to take advantage of her fibroid surgery to undergo tubal ligation.

She had originally planned to undergo the procedure at 26, but saw an opportunity and went for it.

“Cutting your tubes is completely irreversible. You cannot take back that decision once it is done. My doctor tried to convince me to consider other options that would allow me to have children in future, but I refused, and I don’t think I will change my mind,” she said.

The young woman further explained that even after tubal ligation, she could still have children through IVF, where fertilisation takes place outside the body.

She said her eggs would be harvested and combined with her partner’s sperm before being implanted, as her uterus remains intact.

“I decided to just cut my tubes instead of removing my uterus. Removing my uterus would have achieved both outcomes, preventing fibroids and meaning I would never be able to have children or experience periods. But I chose tubal ligation because I am about 99.9% sure I don’t want children. However, people can change their minds, and I am open to growth and adaptation. If I ever change my mind, I would like to still have that option,” she explained.

How much does tubal ligation cost?

Miss Maryash noted that tubal ligation is a 15-minute procedure and does not require a long healing process. She only experienced shoulder pain but confirmed that she felt well after the surgery.

Regarding cost, she explained that her case was different because it was done alongside her fibroid surgery, which reduced the overall price.

“They were not going to charge me the full price. For me, I only topped up about USh 300,000 (approximately KSh 10,445), but I think the usual cost is between USh 500,000 to 600,000 (about KSh 20,891), depending on the doctor you go to,” she said.

Maryash emphasised that her decision was personal and well thought out, adding that she knew exactly what she wanted.
