The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has been encouraged by Lucky Igbokwe, the Abia State Director of the City Boy Movement, to allow youth to fly its banner in the general election of 2027.
On Monday, Igbokwe visited the state working committee at the APC state secretariat on Azikiwe Road in Umuahia to formally announce his desire to run for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency ticket.
He asked the party leadership to back young candidates who had never held elected office, claiming that putting up new candidates would help the party garner support and win state elections.
In the upcoming party primary election, young people who have never held public office ought to be given an opportunity. He stated, “My ambition is motivated by a long-standing commitment to youth empowerment and party growth, not just political desire.”
Igbokwe positioned himself as a grassroots force with shown political impact by claiming that the City Boy Movement, led by him, had mobilized over 60,000 youths in support of President Bola Tinubu.
Recalling his impressive performance in the 2023 PDP governorship primary, where he finished second, he also took inspiration from his political path. He claimed that his tenacity and experience had equipped him for the 2027 race.
“No dream is too big.” He said, “A dream only stays big while you’re sleeping; it becomes attainable when you work toward it.”
The candidate went on to emphasize his contributions to media development and employment in Abia State, pointing to his ownership of Don FM and Ikoro FM as platforms that have boosted APC operations throughout the state in addition to creating jobs.
Chijioke Chukwu, the chairman of the Abia APC, responded by praising Igbokwe’s dedication to the party’s expansion and acknowledging his efforts.
He mentioned that the APC is willing to fill a vacancy in the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in 2027.
Effective representation at the National Assembly requires more than just eloquence, Chukwu emphasized.
He said, “You have not done well if your people do not feel your impact, regardless of how well you speak in the chamber”
Noting that ward and local government organizations now have the authority to choose the party’s flag bearer, he counseled Igbokwe to step up grassroots engagements.
He told the candidate that winning the general election would be possible provided he was given the APC ticket.
Igbokwe is focusing on one of the federal seats in Abia State, the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency. It includes the local government areas of Ikwuano and Umuahia North and South.
The seat is currently held by a lawmaker of a different political platform, making it one of the constituencies the APC has identified as winnable in 2027.
