It all started when Kimuli Jjumba was discharged from Mulago Hospital following the death of her infant daughter, Paulina Namigade.
Why Jjumba carried baby in suitcase
With no money for proper transport, she was forced into an unthinkable compromise, placing her child’s body in a newly purchased suitcase so she could travel back to her village for burial.

Meru: 2 families in mourning as infants die shortly after receiving measles vaccines
Pulse Uganda reports that the 40-year-old woman was pushed into the decision due to her desperation caused by financial challenges.
She boarded a commuter taxi, clutching the suitcase that held her daughter, hoping only to reach home and lay her to rest with dignity.
But somewhere along the journey, tragedy struck again when she briefly stepped out of the taxi to load airtime onto her phone, a routine errand that would cost her dearly.
How Jjumba’s baby disappeared
By the time she returned, the vehicle had already driven off with her suitcase still inside. Efforts to chase after the vehicle were futile.
The vehicle, identified as a Toyota Hiace registration number UBL 104 Z, has since become the focus of her desperate search.
Jjumba believes that a fellow passenger may have taken the bag, likely assuming it contained valuables, unaware of the heartbreaking truth hidden within.
Now, what began as a journey of mourning has turned into an agonising wait. Stranded and unable to proceed with burial arrangements, Jjumba and her family are appealing to the public for help.
