Suspected cultists have killed a young man, identified simply as Emeka, in Ngandam village, Nnobi, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, throwing his visually impaired father into mourning.

Eyewitnesses told NGGOSSIPS Metro that the assailants, numbering about four and aged between 23 and 28, accosted the victim after luring him to a location and immediately attacked him with machetes, blocks, and clubs, resulting in his instant death.

It was gathered that the killing, which occurred on Saturday evening, caused panic in the community as traders and motorists scampered for safety, while the assailants tucked their weapons into their bags and walked away unchallenged.

One of the eyewitnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of attack, said, “The cultists came on foot. They trailed and met him at Umuru Junction, and one of them attacked him with a machete, causing him to fall.

“After he fell, all four of them attacked him simultaneously until he died. It was a chaotic scene, and people fled for safety. No one could come to his rescue for fear of reprisals.”

Our correspondent, who visited the victim’s family compound on Wednesday, observed sympathisers gathered in the vicinity to console the family, particularly the father, who appeared visibly distressed.

Narrating the incident, the father of the deceased, who identified himself as Emmanuel Agwuncha, said, “My son was invited by his suspected killers to the house of one ‘doctor’ (name withheld) in Umuru village, and on arrival, he was immediately attacked with machetes, blocks, and clubs, resulting in his instant death.

“The incident happened on Saturday evening. They later dumped his corpse at the gate of our compound, Agwuncha’s compound, and left.

“We reported the matter to the Nnobi Police Division, and five people, including the ‘doctor’ in whose compound the murder was committed, were arrested. The ‘doctor’ was released on health grounds, as I was told, but that does not mean he has been cleared.

“The suspects and the case file have been transferred to the State CID by the DPO of Nnobi Police Division. We are pleased about this because relatives of the suspects called for a settlement, and the DPO allowed some time for that. However, the meeting failed, and the matter was subsequently transferred to Awka for discreet investigation.

“We need justice in this matter. I am blind, and my legs were amputated due to health issues. I am still alive today because of this son they have killed without any provocation. I need justice for his death.

“The perpetrators should not go scot-free. I appeal to the state government, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, and other well-meaning individuals to come to my aid.”

Also calling for justice, an uncle of the deceased, Anene Agwuncha, who is based in Benin, Edo State, lamented that Emeka’s death has worsened his father’s health condition.

“From what I was told, the killers invited him to the compound, killed him there with machetes, blocks, and clubs, and later dumped his body at the gate of Agwuncha’s compound,” he said.

When contacted, a source at the Nnobi Police Station, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, disclosing that about five suspects arrested in connection with the murder had been transferred to the State CID in Awka.

When also contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said he would make enquiries to obtain more details, adding that the incident had not yet been officially reported to him as of the time of filing this report.

The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at a mortuary in a nearby community.
