A viral video from Delta State has left Nigerians in total shock and anger. The clip, which blew up on social media this week, shows an Ejeba Juju masquerade and his gang turning a festival into chaos in Edjeba community, Warri.
Instead of dancing and entertaining people, the masquerade and about 27 boys attacked innocent residents right after morning service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God near Shell Gate.Eyewitnesses say they first targeted Pastor Barrister Albert and his family as they tried to leave the church. When members rushed to help, the group started beating everyone.
In the video, the masquerade – dressed in red cloth and black head cover – is seen chasing a woman and flogging her mercilessly with a long stick. She fell on the dirty road, crying and begging, “I want to run!”Several people were injured and rushed to hospital. Church property was also damaged.
Nigerians online are fuming. Many are calling it pure violence dressed as culture. “This is not tradition, it is crime!” one person wrote. Residents are now begging the Delta State government and police to arrest the masquerade and his gang immediately before more people get hurt. This is not the first time such incidents have happened during festivals in the area. Calls for action are growing louder as the video continues to trend.
