Vihiga County – A sombre cloud has descended over Mbale town following the arrest of a man accused of throwing his two-month-old baby into the River Ehedwe.

Police confirmed that the suspect is currently being held at Mbale Police Station as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged act continue.

How Vihiga man picked infant

The deeply distressing incident has shaken the local community, leaving the residents grappling with shock, disbelief, and unanswered questions.

According to journalist Bruce Kanzika, the man had separated from the child’s mother and had earlier requested an opportunity to see the infant.

It is alleged that he went to a rented house in the Shalom area of Mbale, where the mother was staying, and took the baby from her before the incident occurred.

What followed has horrified many. Authorities say the man is suspected of proceeding to River Ehedwe, where he allegedly disposed of the infant.

Was the infant’s body found?

The motive behind the act remains unclear, with investigators working to piece together events leading up to the tragedy.

Emergency response teams and residents spent hours combing the river in a desperate search for the baby’s body.

Despite the extensive efforts throughout the day, the search did not yield any results, compounding the anguish felt by those following the case.

In a development that has added further complexity to the matter, police have also detained the child’s mother.

Mbale residents heartbroken

Authorities have not publicly detailed the reasons for her arrest, but confirmed that both parents remain in custody as investigations intensify.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow among Mbale residents, many of whom have called for swift justice and a thorough investigation.

Community members described the situation as heartbreaking, with some struggling to comprehend how such an act could occur.

Police have indicated that the two suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Vihiga dad buries own child

The incident comes a week after another Vihiga man allegedly killed his own child, aged just two years and four months, before burying the body within the family compound.

It emerged that the 35-year-old father lied to relatives that the baby had been taken to the hospital for treatment, but efforts to locate the toddler for two days were futile.

Concerned family members performed a closer inspection that led them to a part of the compound they believe was a shallow grave.
