The incident happened over the weekend during the annual Ejeba festival in Ughelli, where masquerades perform rituals to honour ancestors. Eyewitnesses said the Juju dancer, believed to be possessed by spirits, ignored warnings and lashed out at men, women, and even children who got too close.
“It was pure madness,” said local trader Mama Ngozi. “People ran for their lives as blood began to flow.”
Police have launched an investigation, urging organizers to enforce safety rules. Community leaders defend the tradition but promise stricter controls. The video has sparked outrage online, with calls to modernize such events.
