Tension is building in Rivers State as political forces begin early moves ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with fresh indications that two loyalists of Nyesom Wike may emerge to challenge Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The unfolding situation centres on a quiet but strategic coalition said to be gaining ground across party lines.
The alliance, reportedly backed by Wike, is working towards presenting a consensus candidate to take on the incumbent if he seeks re-election.
Despite rising political activity, Governor Fubara has yet to openly declare his intention for 2027. His silence is already fueling speculation across the state. Many believe this delay is creating room for rivals to organise and strengthen their positions.
Within the emerging coalition, two names have begun to stand out. One of them is Kingsley Chinda, a long-serving lawmaker representing Obio-Akpor Federal Constituency. Chinda is widely seen as one of Wike’s trusted allies, especially during the political crisis that shook the state in recent times.
The second figure gaining attention is Marcus Eji. Eji, a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, is also believed to enjoy Wike’s backing. His recent introduction to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a private meeting in Abuja has further boosted his profile within political circles.
Sources close to the coalition say consultations are ongoing. The aim is to agree on a single candidate who can command support across both the ruling and opposition structures in the state. The final decision, however, may depend largely on Governor Fubara’s next political move.
According to insiders, different strategies are already being considered. If Fubara decides to run for a second term, the coalition may field its candidate on a different platform to challenge him directly. But if he opts out, the same coalition could align fully and push its candidate under a dominant party structure.
Wike, who remains a central figure in Rivers politics, has tried to dismiss claims that ethnicity will influence the choice of candidate. “Those of you sending people to preach ethnicity, it will not work. I will work with those who are sincere, not minding where the person comes from,” he said.
He also maintained that he has not endorsed anyone for the governorship race. His only declared political support, he noted, is for President Tinubu’s second term ambition.
Still, political watchers say the relationship between Wike and Fubara appears to have worsened. The minister recently hinted that he may not support the governor if he seeks re-election, suggesting a deep divide within the state’s political structure.
“No amount of blackmail, no amount of intimidation will make me to repeat the same mistake I made before. If anybody is bringing money to you, it is your business. I don’t know how long I will have to live on this earth, but I will not make the mistake,” Wike stated.
Meanwhile, concerns are growing over Fubara’s political strength ahead of the election. Critics argue that the governor has yet to fully rebuild his support base following the crisis that disrupted his political movement.
However, allies of the governor insist that he still enjoys grassroots backing. One source close to him said the final decision on 2027 lies solely with the governor. The source added that his support across the state can be revived when necessary.
There are also indications that Fubara may not rely on Wike’s endorsement if he decides to contest again, especially given the current strain between both camps.
