PDP rules out defection rumours in Jigawa

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State have dismissed rumours of possible defections by top party figures, reaffirming their commitment to remain in the party and contest the 2027 general elections under its platform.

The resolution was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Dutse on Sunday, where party leaders, elders and members declared unity and loyalty to the PDP amid growing political realignments across the country.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the stakeholders called on all aspirants interested in contesting elective positions to immediately proceed to the party secretariat in Dutse to obtain nomination forms before the deadline for sales and submission.

They stressed the need for early preparation, discipline and collective responsibility, noting that prompt purchase of forms and compliance with party guidelines would ensure a smooth and credible primary election process ahead of 2027.

The meeting also reaffirmed loyalty to former Jigawa State governor, Dr Sule Lamido, describing him as the “leader of the talakawa” and a symbol of stability, experience and grassroots politics within the PDP.

Speakers at the meeting pledged support for Lamido’s leadership and political direction, urging members to remain united and committed to the ideals of the party.

The development comes amid earlier reports suggesting that the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general election, Mustapha Lamido, was considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development many believed could boost the APC’s electoral chances in Jigawa.

However, findings indicate that the planned defection did not materialise after both sides reportedly failed to reach an agreement.

By reaffirming their loyalty to the PDP, stakeholders said speculation surrounding any possible defection had now been laid to rest.

The party leaders expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances in the 2027 elections, insisting that with unity, discipline and strategic mobilisation, the party would emerge victorious at the polls.

Jigawa State PDP Chairman, Babandi Ibrahim, assured members that the party would ensure inclusiveness, transparency and fairness in all its processes.

He urged members across the state to work together to reposition the PDP for success in the coming elections.
