A Nigerian medical doctor has lost her life following post-delivery complications after successfully giving birth to triplets in Bayelsa State.
Dr. Ere Ogbachi, a registrar at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) in Okolobiri, passed away in the early hours of April 14, 2026, at approximately 2:45 a.m., after being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
Her brother, Meshack Sintei, broke the news in an emotional Facebook statement on Wednesday, revealing that while the delivery of the triplets had been successful, her condition deteriorated rapidly in the hours that followed.
“She successfully gave birth to triplets at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri… complications arose that eventually forced us to rush her to the Intensive Care Unit in FMC Yenagoa,” the family said.
Medical staff at the ICU worked desperately to stabilize her, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. The family recounted watching helplessly as her condition worsened. Her oxygen saturation levels fell sharply during the emergency response, dropping from 70 to 50, and eventually to zero.
Sintei described the experience as deeply painful, saying the family had lost not just a sister, but an entire generation. “A generation has been lost, and the Sintei family mourns,” he wrote, adding that she “was a fighter to the end.”
Dr. Ogbachi was a wife, a new mother of triplets, a practicing physician, a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, and a proud alumna of Niger Delta University. She is survived by her three newborn children.
Hospital authorities had not issued an official statement at the time of this report.
