In the winding alleys of Githurai 44, where survival often comes at a cost, one man’s quiet decision to change course is offering a powerful lesson in conscience, courage and redemption.

For years, Salim made a living selling chang’aa, an illicit trade that drew in many young people struggling with addiction and hardship.

Salim’s journey to redemption

The now-reformed man told NgGossips that behind the daily transactions, an inner conflict was growing.

That turning point came when he crossed paths with James Munene Thuku, a philanthropist vying in Roysambu and working to rehabilitate individuals battling alcohol and substance abuse.

Through him, Salim learnt about the transformation of a young woman named Maryanne, someone he knew personally. The revelation unsettled him.

He began to question his role in the cycle. While others, including his own customers, were being supported to rebuild their lives, he remained at the centre of the very trade that was harming them.

“That thing really bothered me,” he admitted. “Even when I sold it, my conscience was not at peace.”

What was Salim’s turning point?

Each day became heavier than the last. Beyond the moral weight, there was also the constant fear of arrest, a reality that defined his life and eroded any sense of stability.

This is because he was always looking over his shoulder, wondering whether he would be arrested or not.

Over time, the internal struggle gave way to a decision that would reshape his future. Salim chose to walk away from the chang’aa business with help from Thuku.

“I didn’t leave because I was forced to, but because I could no longer ignore the impact of my actions,” he reiterated.

Salim’s advice to youths

His journey has not been easy, but it marks the beginning of a different path, one guided by self-awareness and the desire to do better.

Today, his story is being shared as part of a wider movement in the community, where individuals are choosing reform over resignation, and second chances are becoming more than just an idea.

Salim now speaks openly to other young people, urging them to avoid the trap he once found himself in.

His message is simple, but hard-earned: stay away from alcohol and choose a path that builds, rather than destroys.
