Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been forced to answer for previously comparing President Donald Trump to Jesus during an interview with CNN.
On Monday, CNN host Kaitlan Collins asked the Georgia Republican for her thoughts on one of Trump’s latest social media posts: an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus healing a sick man. Article drew condemnation from prominent Christian commentators and voices across the political spectrum. Trump later said he thought the image portrayed him as a doctor, not as Jesus.
Greene, who stepped down from Congress in January, unleashed sharp criticism.
“I thought that was blasphemy, and as a Christian, I was very offended,” she said. “That picture had him in a robe as Jesus is often portrayed with light coming out of his hands…I think he should apologize.”
Collins pointed out that Greene had previously likened Trump to Jesus and pulled up a clip from April 2023 when she defended Trump amid his criminal indictment on charges of falsifying business records.
At the time, Greene said Trump “is joining some of the most incredible people in history being arrested today…Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison…Jesus was arrested and murdered by the Roman government.”
Greene appeared uneasy as she responded.
“We were talking about people being prosecuted unfairly by weaponization of government, political prosecutions, things such as the political protesters,” Greene said. “That’s what I was referring to there. I wasn’t talking trying to portray [Trump] as Jesus. I think that was completely different.”
Greene, once one of Trump’s staunchest allies on Capitol Hill, broke ranks last year over flashpoint issues like the Epstein files and U.S. military strikes on Iran.
In response, Trump branded Greene a “traitor” and vowed to endorse a primary challenger against her. Greene announced she would resign from Congress last November.
Since leaving government her criticism of Trump has increased, particularly over the ongoing war in Iran. When Trump threatened to wipe out “a whole civilization” in Iran last week, Greene called for him to be removed from office via the 25th Amendment.
“We cannot kill an entire civilization,” she wrote on X. “This is evil and madness.”
Two days later, she told podcaster Alex Jones: “The Republican Party needs to burn to the ground. It’s completely controlled.”
