A 33-year-old woman, identified as Olaide Adekunle, has been arrested by police in Lagos State for allegedly selling her infant daughter in a desperate attempt to settle a debt of ₦600,000 owed to a microfinance bank.
According to reports, the suspect, a resident of the Sango area in Ogun State, left her home on March 15 with her baby girl, Mordiat Rasak, but returned without the child. Her husband, alarmed by the development, reportedly questioned her and subsequently alerted authorities when she could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the baby’s whereabouts.
Police investigations later led to her arrest in Lagos, where she allegedly confessed to selling the child in order to repay the outstanding loan. Authorities have since transferred the case for further investigation, with efforts underway to trace and safely recover the missing infant.
Law enforcement officials say the case will also focus on identifying those involved in the transaction, raising concerns about possible child trafficking networks operating within the state.
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the impact of economic hardship on vulnerable families, as well as the need for stronger social support systems and child protection mechanisms.
Police have assured the public that all those connected to the crime will be brought to justice as investigations continue.
