The Office of the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Madonna University Nigeria, has denied allegations circulating on social media linking the institution to the alleged bullying and death of a student, William Fubara, describing the claims as false, malicious, and damaging to its reputation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the university said the narratives being shared online were “misleading and entirely unfounded,” insisting they were being spread to “provoke unnecessary outrage and undermine an institution built on discipline, moral responsibility, and respect for human dignity.”
The statement clarified key points surrounding the incident, stressing that at no point was the late student or any other student subjected to physical assault on campus.
According to the university, “At no time was Mr. William Fubara, or any other student, subjected to physical assault or abuse on campus.”
It further explained that contrary to online claims, the deceased did not die on campus, adding that “Mr. Fubara’s unfortunate passing occurred at his home during the Easter break, not within the university as has been falsely claimed.”
The institution also dismissed reports alleging that the student was killed over the Easter weekend, noting inconsistencies in the timing of such claims.
“One report alleged that Mr. Fubara was killed last weekend. This claim is clearly false, as students were still away on Easter break at the time,” the statement added.
The university further disclosed that it has identified individuals behind the circulation of what it described as malicious narratives, adding that some of them have admitted responsibility and, alongside their parents, have appealed for forgiveness.
The university said it considers the situation “deeply regrettable,” warning against the distortion of facts, particularly in matters involving loss of life.
“While the university will not be distracted by attempts to undermine its integrity, it remains firmly committed to transparency, due process, and the continued safety and welfare of every student in its care,” it stated.
It also urged members of the public, journalists, and social media users to exercise restraint and avoid spreading unverified claims, warning that “sensational narratives and emotionally charged speculation only deepen pain and foster unnecessary division.”
The statement extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
“At this difficult time, Madonna University Nigeria extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. William Fubara. Their loss is profound, and the university’s thoughts are with them,” it said.
The institution also confirmed it is in contact with the bereaved family and has set up a three-man delegation to represent the university at the burial scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and ethical training, stating that it “remains steadfast in its mission and values and will continue to uphold its longstanding tradition of discipline and moral formation.”
Fubara, reportedly a 100-level Psychology student at Madonna University, Okija campus in Anambra State, was said to have died around April 23, 2026, shortly after the Easter break.
However, social media reports, which have not been independently verified, alleged that his death followed months of bullying and a violent assault by fellow students.
According to the circulating accounts, he was reportedly targeted due to his mannerisms and suspicions about his sexuality, leading to sustained harassment and alleged threats prior to the incident.
Some reports further claimed that he was attacked off-campus, suffered severe injuries, and later died after being hospitalised.
Authorities and the university have, however, maintained that the online narratives are inaccurate and misleading, urging the public to await verified findings.
