Kenyan man earns PhD at 33, shares how passion for human rights changed his life

A Kenyan man has inspired many on social media after revealing his incredible academic and professional qualifications, which he acquired by the time he was 33 years old.

Dr Josphat Kilonzo earned his doctorate in law in South Africa, and he admitted that, though the journey was not easy, he remained committed and even more passionate about his field of study.

Speaking in a video shared by Zakheem Rajam, who works at the Supreme Court, Kilonzo said he is passionate about human rights, and so delving into the subject matter during his PhD was fulfilling.

“I was passionate about getting into this space, to be a leading authority and public thinker. I knew at this age that studying would allow me to get there. I am passionate about human rights, and I got into this space because of my focus on human rights,” he said.

The PhD holder noted that he does not feel intimidated when meeting older academic peers.

“I know this qualification is important for me. When you get something that you deserve, you don’t feel intimidated. But yes, I have met people who are surprised that I am this young with a PhD,” he added.

Kilonzo also noted it was not odd for people his age to have such a high academic qualification, as he studied with classmates who were taking their doctorates in their mid-twenties.

Having a PhD has opened Kilonzo’s world with amazing opportunities. In 2023, he worked as an associate professor at a university in the United States.

“I taught human rights, and I had an amazing time. Many opportunities are available for young people, especially when you are diligent and committed to your passion,” he added.

Kilonzo advised those with aspirations to study law not to fear but to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

In other news, recently, Esther Githinji, a young Akorino woman, impressed President Ruto with her eloquent speech at the State House meeting, where the head of state met members of her church.

She revealed that she is a Master’s holder in Geothermal Sciences and a lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and is currently undertaking a PhD in Geothermal Sciences.

Esther called for women to get ambassadorial and permanent secretarial duties.
