Kenyan family explains why unmarried women and kids were hidden during kin’s bizarre burial

• A man was buried quietly due to local traditions, just a week after he died in an accident, and the family shared why some family members could not attend it
• The burial service of the accident victim occurred with his body still in the mortuary, excluding young family members and some women
• The clothes and belongings of the departed man were donated to aid the community in healing after the loss of their loved one

Kakamega, Kenya: A Kenyan family has shared how they buried their loved one without some women and kids in attendance.

In a video shared by Nyto Mwangi, a man is seen showing a grave that is already covered with grass, a week after their loved one, an accident victim, was buried.

According to the man who showed the grave, the man was a drunkard and was hit by a vehicle on the road. Other cars kept running over him until someone finally saw the body, and he was finally taken to the hospital.

“Such deaths as accidents, drowning, and taking one’s life are seen as taboos as they are likely to recur in subsequent generations,” he said.

A tradition among the Kabras, as well as most Luos and Luhyas, had his burial service held while his body was still in the mortuary.

Why weren’t young men allowed to attend burial?

After other mourners went home, and all the kids and young women were hidden in the mortuary, and the young men didn’t see the body being lowered into the grave, the elders brought his body and quietly buried him.

“Children and even men under 30 who had no children were not allowed to be present during the lowering of the body. Grass was planted on the grave to make it look like nothing had ever happened there,” he said.

“The next day, all his clothes and belongings were donated. This is done to help the community forget him and to ward off such kinds of deaths in the future,” he added.
